Like pawns we swivel through life.
Nothing, eyes nor ears, to decipher our course.
Nothing but our hearts tuned to the needs of the bishops and rooks around us.

Like pawns we wobble.
Two spaces.
Ruled by fear of defeat from pawns alike us.
Ruled by persuasion to fulfill our dull universal destiny.

Like pawns we walk a straight line.
Veering only on survival’s impulse.
Knowing no variation of livelihood.
Knowing only what is placed before us.

Like pawns we stumble to achieve servitude towards kings and queens.
All alike we look.
All alike we act.

Like pawns we live.
Like pawns we die.
May a bold step backwards differentiate human from pawn.
