Ephesians 4:19

NIV

Having lost all sensitivity, they have given themselves over to sensuality so as to indulge in every kind of impurity, with a continual lust for more.

Message Version

And so I insist—and God backs me up on this—that there be no going along with the crowd, the empty-headed, mindless crowd. They’ve refused for so long to deal with God that they’ve lost touch not only with God but with reality itself. They can’t think straight anymore. Feeling no pain, they let themselves go in sexual obsession, addicted to every sort of perversion.

After reading through this verse Tuesday night at merge, I wrote this simple idea that popped in my head. I thought the message version was especially interesting “Feeling no pain,” here’s what I thought:

“This verse implicates that pain is a reminder to us that we’ve gone off track.

Pain is just like the bumps in the road when you go out of your lane; they startle you, and center you back where you’re supposed to be.

If you’ve gotten to the point where you dont feel the bumps in the road when you’re out of your lane, when you feel no pain in what you know is wrong, it should be a serious sign that you are far off the road: you’re way beyond the little bumps. You’re off in the dust crops.

You need to stop, figure out where you’re at, and get back on the right road, because you’re probably lost.

And if you do feel those little bumps every now and then, if you feel that pain when you know you’ve messed up, be glad for it, because you know God has got his hand over you. He’s watching you! Waiting on you. He wants to get back on the road trip with you.

If you would just move with Him, instead of fighting, he’ll quickly move you back to where you’re supposed to be. Fighting only wears down your tires and wastes gas. Don’t set yourself back like that, move forward and let God be your tour guide.”
